Youth Parliament Raising awareness of Youth about Sava River
The Sava Commission together with the National Institute for Biology and the Institute for Water from Slovenia organized the on-line round table on 1st June 2022 when the Sava day is celebrated. The schools which collaborate in the Sava Youth Parliament presented the results of the monitoring campaign on the selected locations along the Sava. The monitoring campaign was held in April 2022.
The slogan of the Sava day 2022 is “Protect our rivers from plastic and microplastic!”.
The following schools participated at the roundtable:
- Mixed Middle School “Hazim Šabanović”, Visoko from Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Vocational and Technical High School, Gradiška from Bosnia and Herzegovina,
- gimnazija Ivan Supek High School, Zagreb from Croatia,
- Biotechnical Education Center Ljubljana, Food school, Ljubljana from Slovenia
- School of Applied Arts Šabac from Serbia
At the roundtable which gathered more than 80 participants, the Executive Secretary of the Sava Commission, Mr. Dragan Zeljko, emphasized that the participation of young people in the celebration of Sava Day lasted since 2008, when the Sava Youth Parliament was established, as a unique platform that allows young people’s voices to be heard and encourages their involvement in water management.
Duška Kunštek, the Chair of the Sava Commission stressed that the involvement of young people was extremely important for the sustainable development and preservation of the rich biodiversity and unique beauty of the Sava River Basin.
At the end of the Sava Day celebration event, the participants agree that the plastic poses a significant threat to our environment. Every person in the world and especially young people should contribute to minimize the use of plastic by change of behavior, while the industry should use more environmental-friendly materials wherever is possible caring for the future of the new generations.
